FAQs

Will insurance cover pelvic floor therapy?

We are out-of-network for most insurance plans but submit claims on your behalf. Coverage varies by plan, but we also accept HSA/FSA payments.

What is done during pelvic floor therapy?

Sessions are typically one hour long and include an evaluation of your concerns, followed by hands-on treatment and personalized exercises to address your specific needs.

When should you start pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy?

Pelvic floor therapy can be started at any point during pregnancy, but many healthcare providers recommend beginning as soon as possible if experiencing symptoms such as urinary leakage, pelvic pain, or pressure.

What does a postpartum physical therapist do?

A postpartum physical therapist specializes in helping individuals recover after childbirth by addressing musculoskeletal issues, pelvic floor dysfunction, and overall body strength.

When to see pelvic floor PT postpartum?

If you have any concerns or symptoms, we recommend calling for a free 15 minute consultation with one of our DPTs. At that time, we may recommend you follow up with your OB/GYN, or suggest our postpartum telehealth service. But typically we wait until patients are cleared by their physicians at 6 weeks.

Can you fix diastasis recti with physical therapy?

Yes, diastasis recti (abdominal separation) can be effectively treated with physical therapy in most cases. A pelvic floor physical therapist can guide you through targeted exercises to strengthen the deep core muscles, restore proper function, and reduce the abdominal gap.

Physical Therapist

Ali Cunniffe received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware. Prior to beginning her graduate studies, she received her Bachelors in Biology from Franklin & Marshall College where she also played on the collegiate women’s soccer team. It was through her soccer career (and the various injuries she sustained and rehabilitated) that she became interested in a career in physical therapy. At her own physical therapy appointments, she found a passion for using exercise to overcome pain and restore function.  Upon her initial studies at University of Delaware, she further identified a strong interest in pelvic health PT and its underserved populations. She has since broadened her skills which include manual therapy techniques, neuromuscular retraining and a strong knowledge of therapeutic exercise while also completing additional pelvic floor physical therapy training through the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute. While Ali is passionate in treating all patients, including both those with pelvic health conditions and orthopedic injuries in a way that promotes whole body wellbeing and function, Ali has a particular interest in finding ways to help resolve pain during pregnancy and finds it especially important that postpartum individuals are supported comprehensively through their recovery.

When not at Indigo, Ali enjoys spending her time with family and friends, playing pickleball, skiing, reading, and watching any and all Bravo shows!
