Dry Needling
Physical Therapy
At Indigo Physiotherapy, we believe that effective pain relief and improved function start with addressing the root cause of your discomfort. That’s why we offer dry needling, a targeted, research-backed technique to release muscle tension, reduce pain, and restore your body’s natural movement patterns. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or looking to enhance your physical performance, dry needling can be a powerful tool to help you feel better.
WHAT IS
Dry Needling
Dry needling is a therapeutic technique designed to alleviate muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve movement. It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific trigger points or areas of muscle to release tension, increase blood flow, and promote natural healing. Backed by research and performed by trained PTs, dry needling is a safe and effective tool to address a range of musculoskeletal concerns.
How
We Use Dry Needling
Dry needling can be seamlessly integrated into your personalized plan of care. As one of many tools that physical therapists can use to target muscle pain and dysfunction, any of our dry needling trained PTs may recommend this technique to facilitate restoration of muscle function, decrease pain, and improve brain-body connection. By combining dry needling with hands-on therapy and movement-based exercise, we enhance your results – helping you achieve lasting relief more quickly.

FAQs
Which clinicians at Indigo perform dry needling?
Dr Mandy and Dr Erin at Roland Park-Baltimore,
Dr Andrea at Frederick/Columbia, and
Dr. Erica at Mosaic currently offer dry needling.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained PT, dry needling is quite safe. During pregnancy, precautions should be taken during certain trimesters and with location and placement of the needles. PTs and patients will discuss any precautions or contraindications prior to utilizing dry needling as a part of the treatment plan.
Are there any side effects?
Muscle soreness, bruising, or fatigue are the most common side effects of dry needling. These effects should resolve on their own over 24-48 hours.
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
While dry needling and acupuncture use similar needles, the purpose is different. Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine where needles are inserted into meridians in the body to address a broad range of conditions. Dry needling is performed by trained physical therapists and is practiced to decrease muscle pain and dysfunction and support improved communication between the brain and muscles.
